Child Abuse Prevention Month: A Call to Action

April 22, 2024 by Keenan

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time when we all come together to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect. Every year, Keenan, in partnership with ReLiEF Joint Powers Authority and the California School Boards Association, takes the lead in promoting and providing resources to prevent child abuse, a cause that they passionately advocate for.

In partnership with ReLiEF, Keenan has developed a resource page dedicated to preventing child abuse. This page is a treasure trove of resources that school districts nationwide can easily implement. It’s designed to raise awareness, establish policies and procedures, and train staff to prevent child abuse.

In addition to providing resources, Keenan also encourages districts to test their knowledge and learn about the resources available to them. This learning opportunity comes with a bonus - a chance to win a $2,000 educational grant. Participants can enter to win by watching an informative short video about on-site behavioral boundaries. After watching the video, viewers can enter their contact information for a chance to win the grant. However, it’s important to note that only districts participating in the ReLiEF JPAs are eligible to win.

Last year’s educational grant winner, Menifee Union School District, shared their inspiring mission: “At Menifee Union School District, we believe every child deserves to be safe and protected, and we want to do our part to make a difference. I am incredibly proud of our staff who not only support the cause but strive every day to make our schools a safe haven for children. The proceeds of this grant will be used to support an end-of-year celebration for our students in our Foster and Homeless Youth Program. Through compassionate care and vigilance, we thrive!”

Reflecting on last year’s Child Abuse Prevention Month campaign, it’s clear that the impact was significant. Over 2,371 viewers played the ‘Recognizing Grooming Behaviors’ video for a chance to win a grant. More than 70 school districts participated, and a total of $6,000 was awarded towards educational grants, benefiting three school district winners.

As we observe Child Abuse Prevention Month, let’s remember that it takes a community to protect a child. Let’s continue to work together to protect our children and create a safer world for them.
