Celebrating Women’s History Month

March 09, 2023 by Keenan

The origins of Women's History Month can be traced back to the first International Women's Day observance in 1911. However, it wasn't until 1980 that President Carter issued a presidential proclamation designating the week of March 8th as National Women's History Week. In 1987, Congress declared the entire month of March as Women's History Month to honor and celebrate the achievements and contributions of women throughout history.

Women's History Month is an opportunity to recognize the significant role that women have played in shaping our world and our society. It provides a platform to highlight the contributions of women in various fields, such as science, politics, arts, business, and education, among others. It also serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for gender equality and the importance of continuing to work toward a more inclusive and equitable society.

Keenan has been focused on leveraging the power of diversity to drive our innovative solutions over the past 50 years. Diversity is one of those key ingredients that ensures that our clients and their employees are represented and addressed by the solutions we create.

In 1987, when Congress declared March as Women’s History Month, only about 33% of the insurance industry workforce was female. In contrast, and part of the strength of Keenan, we had 156 employees that year, and 124 of them were women – 79%. Today, women comprise almost 60% of the insurance industry workforce, and 73% of Keenan’s workforce is comprised of women, including more than 60% of our middle and upper management positions.

As we celebrate our 50th year, we are proud of the diversity that has consistently marked our history and the innovation that diversity drives.
