Preventing Child Abuse: Let’s Get Ahead of the Curve
Few traumatic human experiences are more damaging and enduring as the physical, sexual or emotional abuse of a child. The immediate effects of abuse on a child are devastating to their psychological and behavioral development, relationships and educational achievement. Child abuse victims suffer long-term consequences, often lasting throughout adulthood. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Keenan is committed to positive action for protecting children and stopping abusers.
It’s a tragic epidemic. A reported ten percent of students say they have been sexually abused. Statistics show that 160,000 students per day do not attend school for fear of being bullied. Sixty percent of middle school students say they have been bullied, and 55.2% of LGBT students experience cyber bullying. Some of these issues can also expose educational institutions to potential Title IX sexual discrimination allegations. Compounding the human loss, hundreds of millions of dollars spent defending and resolving serious claims against schools are taking enormous resources right out of classrooms.
Implementing training, communication, policies and raising community awareness can go a long way toward preventing such devastating and expensive public claims in school districts. Keenan has just launched a new School Safety Center website to bring together the comprehensive resources schools need today to better protect students, staff and their communities. We are pleased to make these important resources available to schools free of charge.
Keenan’s School Safety Center provides schools with a wide range of tools, training, references and best practices on abuse, bullying, Title IX compliance and campus safety from a central web page:
The School Safety Center will be updated with the latest developments in regulatory compliance, news, and best practices for keeping our schools safer. It’s all about protecting the future!
Keenan will be highlighting the new School Safety Center at the upcoming California Association of School Business Officials (CASBO) Annual Conference, April 12-15, in Long Beach. If you are attending the conference, we invite you to stop by our booth and learn more.
Join us in our efforts to pave the way to a brighter, safer tomorrow!
