LOS ANGELES, Calif. – July 6, 2017 – Shavonna Ashley, a full-time Special Education Aide Assistant for the Inglewood Unified School District, has been convicted of one count of workers’ compensation insurance fraud. A Los Angeles County judge found her guilty of making false and fraudulent material statements for obtaining workers’ compensation benefits and sentenced her to three years of formal probation. Ashley was also ordered to perform 200 hours of community service and to pay formal restitution of $18,720.00 to her employer, Inglewood Unified School District, through their third-party administrator, Keenan & Associates.
Ashley alleged that she sustained an injury to her finger due to a special needs student biting and bending the finger. During the period of disability, she collected $3,390.00 in temporary disability benefits for the period of Sept. 25, 2012, through Dec. 17, 2012, and collected permanent disability benefits in a lump sum of $3,825.00. Ashley also received $9,192.64 in medical treatment due to the alleged injury.
Ashley was placed on disability and time off work due to her subjective complaints of severe and constant pain. Her treating physician placed her on modified work restrictions for her injury that the employer could not accommodate. Due to the nature and extent of the injury, the previous claims examiner became suspicious and referred the file to the York Risk Services Group Special Investigation Unit (SIU) for surveillance.
In 2013, Inglewood USD changed its third-party administrators to Keenan & Associates who continued the investigation under its SIU department. Ashley’s trial was held on June 13, 2017, resulting in the felony insurance fraud conviction. The court Docket Number is BA449766.
