TORRANCE, Calif. – April 12, 2016 – Keenan, the largest privately held insurance brokerage and consulting firm in California, and the Internet Marketing Association (IMA), one of the fastest growing professional business groups in the world, have released the results of their first “Wellness in the Workplace” survey.
The survey, conducted among IMA’s college-educated professional membership base, was designed to garner insights into employee attitudes toward corporate wellness programs in the workplace. The survey questions ranged from the importance of access to such programs (as both a current or prospective employee), the kinds of programs deemed most valuable, how well such programs are promoted for participation, how often they are used, and the use of wearable fitness tracking devices.
Highlights of the survey results include:
- Approximately 60% of respondents believe it is “very important” that a company offer wellness benefits to employees (a full 87% indicated “important” or “very important”).
- 82% said they would consider a company’s corporate wellness policy/benefits before joining a company.
- “Reimbursement for gym membership” was the highest ranked corporate wellness initiative among respondents, followed by “Flexible spending accounts for child care, commuting, etc.” and “Stress reduction techniques.”
- 54% of survey respondents have not used their company’s wellness offerings in the past 12 months.
- Only 25% of respondents have completed a wellness survey at their current job.
- 89% of respondents said they would participate in a company-wide fitness challenge/program to build team health/morale.
- 34% of respondents use a wearable fitness tracking device, with 44% of those focusing their tracking on exercise.
“As thought leaders in the industry, Keenan is pleased to provide some insights for employers into the importance of wellness programs in the workplace among employees,” said Robin Rager, Ph.D., Director of Health Management of KeenanWell. “Clearly these programs are vital to both attracting and retaining employees, yet there is also room for improvement in terms of their promotion and participation levels in order to maximize effectiveness.
“Overall, the survey results highlight the incredible opportunity companies have to engage with their employees on health and wellness initiatives that can provide tangible benefits for both employees and their employers,” added Rager. “Maintaining a healthy workforce is not only critical in controlling a company’s health care costs, but it can also have a major impact on the performance, productivity and well-being of their employees.”
