2.5 Million Missing Out on Subsidies

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently released a report showing that approximately 2.5 million individuals who may qualify for premium tax credits are missing out by purchasing coverage outside of the Exchanges.  In addition, about 1.1 million of those individuals could also qualify for cost-sharing subsidies to reduce deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses.

HHS suspects many of these individuals are unaware they may be eligible for financial assistance to help pay for the cost of health coverage.  Accordingly, HHS plans to modify their outreach efforts to reach these consumers and provide better information.

More than 310,000 Californians who are currently enrolled in individual coverage purchased outside of Covered California may be eligible for premium tax credits.  Open enrollment for coverage through Covered California in 2017 begins November 1, 2016 and ends on January 31, 2017.
