TORRANCE, Calif. – Dec. 9, 2015 – Keenan, the largest privately held insurance brokerage and consulting firm in California, has announced the unification of its youth-oriented community investment efforts under a single program. Called Right Start, it is an umbrella program that centers on youth who have more determination than resources to succeed.
Right Start will now encompass existing Keenan programs including its internships for two South Central Los Angeles high schools, work in support of the YMCA Youth & Government program, Child Abuse Prevention Center for California schools, and annual school supplies drive for students in need. In addition, the company has announced the latest extension of that program, Right Start Mentoring.
Under the new Right Start Mentoring program, Keenan will roll out mentoring opportunities for employees in many of the firm’s locations around California. Keenan associates will be given the opportunity to mentor middle school students, either at one of the firm’s offices or at their local school.
“Of the many community-based efforts designed to create new paths for these young people, one solution has emerged as particularly effective: a supportive, constructive relationship with a caring adult,” said Dan Keenan, Senior Vice President. “Most mentoring programs are conducted right after school, so it’s tough for employees to participate due to work schedules. With the Right Start program, our employees can take two work hours per week to mentor the kids and help them build a bright future.”
The program kicks off this year with the Keenan headquarters office in Torrance and Wilmington Middle School, in a partnership with Los Angeles Team Mentoring. Keenan will subsequently roll out mentoring opportunities for employees in other locations in the state.
Today, there are 5.8 million young people nationwide who face barriers to employment. Among the most significant barriers are foster care, incarceration and disability. At a pivotal moment in their lives, gang activity, early pregnancy and parenthood, or below-poverty, low-wage work may appear as their only paths forward.
Los Angeles Team Mentoring is focused on guiding middle school students growing up in challenging urban environments to recognize and reach their full potential as members of the community. Through a school-based approach to mentoring, young adolescents are given the tools and support necessary to make positive choices during a critical period in their lives.
“We are very pleased to be expanding the wonderful relationship we’ve built with Keenan that began with participating in their Impact Day events,” noted William Figueroa, Director of Programs for Los Angeles Team Mentoring. “Their commitment to giving back to the community is exemplary. And their new mentoring program has given us the opportunity to work with Wilmington Middle School for the first time.”
