State Health Insurance Exchanges will begin accepting applications for coverage on October 1, 2013. The Obama administration is spending a great deal of energy convincing uninsured Americans about how important it is for them to buy insurance through these Exchanges. A recent article by Kaiser Health News explains that the messaging about the need to purchase health coverage is reaching an unintended audience.
The State Exchanges were not intended to serve seniors. Yet, messages about the State Exchanges are confusing enough that some seniors are beginning to ask questions about signing up for Exchange based coverage and what will happen to their Medicare benefits. This raises the potential for scammers to take advantage of seniors and could mean that employers with a significant retiree population might have to devote additional resources to combat this confusion among their retirees.
