In general, individuals and families can purchase and enroll in health insurance coverage through Covered California only during open enrollment.  The next open enrollment period is November 1, 2016 through January 31, 2017.  However, special enrollment periods may apply for individuals and families who experience certain qualifying life events.  The following are common types of qualifying events:

  • Loss of employer-sponsored coverage
  • Marriage or entering  a domestic partnership
  • Birth or adoption of a child
  • Loss or exhaustion of COBRA coverage (failure to pay COBRA premiums is not considered a loss of coverage)
  • Adult child reaching age 26 and no longer eligible under a family plan

In order to take advantage of a special enrollment period, changes must be reported and a health plan selected within 60 days of the qualifying life event.
