Keenan Garners Top Awards in Two Categories of Inaugural Business Insurance Magazine U.S. Insurance Awards

TORRANCE, Calif.  – Keenan, an industry-leading California insurance brokerage and consulting firm for health care organizations and public agencies, has received top recognition in two categories of the inaugural 2018 U.S. Insurance Awards presented by Business Insurance magazine on March 8, 2018, in New York.

The two U.S. Insurance Awards were presented to Keenan in the Community Outreach Project (Pro Bono) category for the child abuse prevention resources provided through its School Safety Center and in the Managed Care Provider Team of the Year category for the company’s Saving The Opiate Patient (STOP) intervention program.

The awards program was created to help address the industry’s talent crisis by funding the BI Scholarship Endowment. This endowment will open new opportunities to provide scholarships, grants and programming at universities without risk management degree programs, including historically black colleges and universities.

The Keenan School Safety Center resources are available at no cost to schools (regardless of whether they are a Keenan client), teachers, parents, substitutes and volunteers to provide essential training for protecting children within the education community. To date, the initiative has resulted in 949,810 school staff completing mandatory reporter courses, saving California schools an estimated $19 million in training expense.

The STOP program was implemented under Keenan’s managed care protocols to help injured workers avoid addiction to opioid pain medication and facilitate an earlier return to work. The reviews focus on preventing medication overutilization and gaining faster access to treatment that improves an injured worker’s medical and occupational outcome. In one year, the effort reduced narcotics utilization by 21% and pharmacy expenses by more than $5 million.
