Awareness is the First Step Toward Action
October highlights several high profile commemorations that recognize of a variety of important health, safety and security issues. Among the causes recognized during October are:
- Breast Cancer Awareness Month
- National Bullying Prevention Month
- National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
- National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
- National Disability Employment Awareness Month
- Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 2-8)
The word “awareness” figures prominently into many of these October events. That’s because we cannot act on a problem until we know it exists, and how it affects us. For some of us, we become aware when someone close to us is diagnosed or victimized. Others may not become aware until they, themselves, encounter unexpected adversity. It would be difficult to find an individual who is not somehow affected by at least one of the six causes listed above.
Commemorating these issues are not just empty Acts of Congress, Presidential Proclamations, or to produce a bump in fundraising. These things impact real people and raising consciousness about them is a call to action.
Many Keenan associates are directly involved taking action on these causes, both personally and professionally. We’re especially proud of those who volunteer their time to support organizations and who care for family members, friends, colleagues and others in their communities touched by illness, stigma and loss. On a daily basis, the job of many Keenan employees is to assist multitudes of people dealing with these problems. Whether they are implementing wellness promotion, designing risk management programs, developing educational resources, paying claims or helping injured workers return to work, our associates are passionate about taking action for those who need it most.
To solve the biggest, most difficult challenges, takes the whole community. Up and down the state, throughout the entire nation, and the wide world, involvement on that scale is still accomplished one person at a time. We encourage all of you to increase your awareness, find a reason to become personally involved, and take action. Join us, and let’s change the world together.
