Keenan Earns Gold in Annual Healthyroads “Fit Company” Employer Wellness Awards

TORRANCE, Calif. – May 28, 2014 – Keenan, the largest privately held insurance brokerage and consulting firm in California, has been named a gold award winner in the fourth annual Healthyroads Fit Company Awards® program. The awards recognize organizations nationwide that demonstrate their commitment to improving the overall health and fitness of their employees by offering exceptional employee wellness programs and benefits.

The “Fit for Keenan” employee wellness program promotes a culture of health by rewarding employees with valuable incentives. To start, Keenan employees can reduce their annual medical plan premiums by up to $1,200 by completing three key steps: submitting a health screening from their physician; completing a Personal Health Assessment; and completing a declaration of no tobacco use, or enrolling in a tobacco cessation program and completing a tobacco cessation declaration.

In addition, throughout the year, employees are encouraged to compete in company-wide challenges that can earn them cash awards as they improve their health. For each challenge in which employees participate, they are entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card. Those who participate in all challenges are entered into a drawing for a $500 gift card. Other challenges through the year offer larger rewards to inspire change.

Keenan’s 12-week “Thinner Winner” weight loss challenge motivated Naneen Weber to be more active, make healthier food choices using free, online calorie and nutrition trackers, and begin a regular exercise regimen. Thinner Winner participants weighed in every two weeks to update results. The employee who lost the highest percentage of body weight received a cash reward of $1,500. Additionally, each participant who lost at least 10 percent of their body weight received a cash reward of $50 or more.

With more than 200 participants, Keenan achieved a company-wide weight loss of more than 900 pounds. Weber, who lost 18.23 percent of her body weight, took home the grand prize and has gone on to earn an even more valuable reward: a healthier, more active lifestyle that continues to motivate her and her spouse (who lost 40 pounds) to stay active.

“In the beginning, it was about the financial incentive. But as I began to lose the weight and find myself getting stronger, that became the real prize for me,” said Weber. “Now, I exercise almost every day, and I rarely eat out or drink soda. We did a complete 180 on our eating and exercise habits. Now I can run almost two miles without stopping. And I just feel incredible!”

The Keenan wellness program is also about more than challenges. Participants have access to no-cost Healthyroads® telephone health coaching, running and walking clubs, wellness fairs, worksite education, healthy vending machines and website tools. Wellness has become ingrained in the culture and is promoted regularly through email, intranet, posters, meetings and social media.

Keenan’s wellness program was first implemented in 2010, and in 2013 it achieved a participation rate of nearly 87 percent with its Personal Health Assessment.
