State and federal health insurance exchanges opened their doors for business on October 1st of this year. Americans who have purchased insurance through an exchange will begin receiving health insurance coverage on January 1, 2014. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has released an article explaining why the newly insured might have difficulty accessing health care services.
The JAMA article is predicated on the observation that many primary care physicians’ practices are currently operating at or near capacity. This situation dictates that significant investments in technology and care models would be required to deliver services to the newly insured. The article also addresses some of the increased financial and regulatory risks associated with delivering services to those newly insured through the exchange.
